Elbow Replacement (Total Elbow Arthroplasty)

Elbow replacement is a surgical procedure performed in cases of advanced elbow osteoarthritis, post-traumatic joint damage, or severe joint destruction caused by rheumatic diseases. In this procedure, the bone surfaces forming the elbow joint are replaced with specialized artificial prosthetic components to relieve pain and reduce functional loss.

Why Is It Performed?

Elbow replacement is usually indicated in the following situations:

  • Advanced elbow osteoarthritis

  • Rheumatic diseases, especially rheumatoid arthritis

  • Comminuted or non-healing fractures around the elbow

  • Post-traumatic joint deformity and loss of motion

  • Patients experiencing severe pain and functional impairment

Types of Elbow Replacement

  1. Total Elbow Replacement
Both the humeral (upper arm) and ulnar (forearm) components of the elbow joint are replaced with prosthetic implants. Elbow stability is provided by a specialized hinged mechanism.

  2. Partial Elbow Replacement
Only a portion of the joint is replaced. This option may be suitable in selected cases, particularly in patients with isolated joint damage.

  3. Revision Elbow Replacement
Performed when a previously implanted elbow prosthesis needs to be replaced due to loosening, infection, or fracture.

Benefits of Elbow Replacement

  • Relief from severe elbow pain

  • Improved range of motion

  • Restoration of function in daily activities (dressing, eating, writing, etc.)

  • Significant improvement in quality of life in patients with rheumatic diseases

  • Successful aesthetic and functional outcomes

Note: Elbow replacement is performed less frequently than hip and knee replacement, and proper patient selection is extremely important. Weight-lifting capacity is limited after surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How much can I use my arm after elbow replacement?
Patients usually wear a protective splint for the first few weeks. Light activities can typically be started within 3–4 weeks.

  2. Can I lift heavy objects after elbow replacement?
No. Regularly lifting more than 1–2 kg is not recommended after elbow replacement, as this may shorten the lifespan of the implant.

  3. Is physical therapy necessary?
Yes. Controlled postoperative physical therapy is essential to restore both range of motion and muscle strength.

  4. How long does an elbow prosthesis last?
With proper use, it can last 10–15 years or longer. Careful use and regular follow-up with your physician are required.
