About Me

Professor, MD Mehmet Erdil

I graduated from Istanbul University, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine in 2001. I completed my specialization in Orthopedics and Traumatology at the same faculty in 2007. Following my military service and tenure at a public hospital, I began my academic career in 2010. I have served as a faculty member at Bezmialem Vakıf University, Istanbul Medipol University, and Acıbadem University. In 2012, I worked as a research fellow in the field of sports surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, USA.

Between 2019 and 2025, I held the position of Professor at Acıbadem University. As of 2025, I have left the university and started seeing patients at my private practice.

My areas of special interest include sports surgery, knee and hip replacement surgery, and arthroscopic surgery. Academically, I have authored over 100 scientific articles, contributed to more than 100 book chapters, served as editor for 5 books, and acted as translation editor for 3 additional books.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is one of the most important ligaments in the knee and plays a critical role in maintaining knee stability. The ACL is located between the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone) at the front of the knee, controlling movements within the joint. This ligament prevents the tibia from sliding forward and also limits rotational movements, helping to maintain overall joint stability.

Meniscus Tear

A meniscus tear is a tear in the meniscus cartilage of the knee joint. This condition typically occurs as a result of twisting the knee, making sharp turns, or experiencing excessive strain on the joint.

Joint Replacement Surgery

Joint replacement surgery is a procedure performed to restore joint function, reduce pain, and improve the patient’s quality of life. This surgical procedure is typically recommended in cases where the cartilage in the joint has been damaged due to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, trauma, or other joint disorders.

Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique in which the internal structures of a joint are visualized and treated through small incisions. The procedure is performed using a thin instrument called an arthroscope, which is equipped with a camera and specialized surgical tools. Arthroscopy is commonly used in large joints such as the knee, shoulder, hip, ankle, elbow, and wrist.

The advantages of arthroscopy include smaller incisions, reduced pain, a faster recovery process, and shorter hospital stays.

Sports Injuries

Sports injuries encompass traumatic or overuse-related damage to the musculoskeletal system in active individuals. These injuries are common among both amateur and professional athletes and can significantly impact performance, career longevity, and overall quality of life.

When managed by skilled hands through a scientifically-based and individualized treatment approach, athletes can not only return to their sport but, in some cases, come back even stronger than before. In this process, the guidance of physicians specialized in sports orthopedics plays a crucial role in shaping the athlete’s career trajectory and ensuring optimal recovery.
