Elbow Arthroscopy

Elbow arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat problems within the elbow joint. A small camera and specialized surgical instruments are inserted through tiny incisions, allowing detailed visualization of the joint structures and precise surgical intervention.

Why is Elbow Arthroscopy Performed?

Elbow arthroscopy can be used to diagnose and treat various elbow problems, including:

  • Loose bodies (bone or cartilage fragments within the joint)

  • Limited elbow motion (joint stiffness, arthrofibrosis)

  • Elbow osteoarthritis (degeneration of the joint)

  • Structural issues following recurrent elbow dislocations

  • Synovitis (inflammation of the joint lining)

  • Ligament and capsule problems

Benefits of Elbow Arthroscopy

  • Smaller incisions and less tissue damage compared to open surgery

  • Short hospital stay and faster recovery

  • Reduced pain and improved range of motion

  • Better cosmetic results

  • Earlier return to daily activities and work

Note: A short period of splint use may be necessary after elbow arthroscopy. Early initiation of physical therapy is very important to preserve elbow mobility.

Types of Elbow Arthroscopy Procedures

  1. Loose Body Removal: Removal of bone or cartilage fragments within the joint that cause pain and catching.

  2. Joint Release (Arthrolysis): Cleaning adhesions and stiff tissues that limit elbow range of motion.

  3. Synovectomy: Removal of inflamed joint lining (synovium) to reduce pain and swelling.

  4. Cartilage Surface Smoothing: Cleaning and repairing damaged or arthritic cartilage surfaces.

  5. Ligament Repairs: Procedures on ligament tissue in cases of recurrent dislocations or instability.

Frequently Asked Questions – Elbow Arthroscopy

  1. When can I start using my arm after elbow arthroscopy?
Depending on the procedure, gentle movements are usually allowed within 1–2 weeks. Full strength use may take 4–6 weeks.

  2. Is physical therapy necessary?
Yes. Physical therapy is critical for successful outcomes, especially in patients with elbow stiffness.

  3. Does pain last long after arthroscopy?
Pain is usually mild to moderate and decreases within a few days. It can be easily managed with pain medication.
